"By far the grandest of the new Pirate series, Brickbeard's Bounty is the first full-size Pirate ship we've seen in a while. I am definitely pleased with this set, but it lacked that "oh my god it's perfect" quality.
The build is divided into 4 bags. The first 2 contain the minifigures and the basic hull of the ship, the 3rd has Brickbeard's cabin, and the last bag contains the masts, rigging, and anything else left out. The build is quite fun, and the instructions are easy to follow.
Minifigures:
I am very pleased with the minifigures that came with this set. They really make playing with the ship very fun. The minifigs are printed on both sides (like every other pirate set) and the Imperials make quite an impression.
Body/Hull of Ship:
The ship actually has plenty of space to move and position the figures. The 2 cannons can be positioned to fire out of any of the 4 openings, and the ammunition baskets can be removed and replaced easily. For some strange reason, there are 2 cannonballs in one basket and 3 in the other. Under Brickbeard's cabin, there is a rat and a keg. Not much else to say about the hull.
Brickbeard's Cabin:
This is the best part of the ship. It is very fun to build, has nice colors and elements, and it fairly simple. At the back, there are 2 crossed swords, and the back wall is actually slightly tilted. The windows and doors are nice, but the interior is somewhat empty. On top, there is the steering wheel and the 3rd firing cannon. Sometimes the entire cabin won't attach completely very easily though.
Masts and riggings:
The masts are very stable and the sails stay on well. The net is well attached, but it can't move very far like the old ones. The mermaid was a good idea, but in my opinion improperly placed. If you brush the pole supporting her slightly or lift it up, she spins out of position.
Final Thoughts:
I was generally pleases with this set, but there were several disappointments, like the mermaid, the net, and the generally plain design. Many of the old pirate ships had "useful" features like sails that fell down or cabins that fell apart, but Brickbeard's Bounty is generally "special-functionless". It is a very huge and grand model, with amazing playability and great minifigures, but I would expect a little more from Lego on this one. It rightfully deserves a solid 4. Good work Lego, but try to incorporate more special functions into future models."
