Excavator

"I got this for my birthday, and it was my favorite present. It is a huge set and well worth £40.00. It was great fun to build and took about 2 hours to build. The enginering envolved is very clever, and it is a realy sturdy design. I found adding power functions motors made it much better to play around with, so i would recomend paying an extra £20.00 for PF motors if you dont already have some. It would be better if there were instructions to add motors that make the excavator drive around as well as just adjust the boom, but it is still a brilliant set."

amazing set
Posted: March 3, 2009
"This set is astounding. The gear design and overall design is pure genius. I give kudos to the designer and the lego team that helped to make this masterpiece of a set. When you turn the gear on the back of the excavator, the arm can either move, up or scoop in with its bucket scoop. The color scheme is perfect for this set. It has mechanical actuators that give the excavator a hydraulic feel to it. The gear system includes a gear switcher that can give you the option of first gear, or second gear. It's the king of all technic sets, I would give it a five star ranking any time. Go out and buy it, there is not one penny you would be wasting if you buy this set. It is a great set, don't leave it out of your collection."

Buy This Set First!

"Brilliant. Realy realistic and so powerful.
For less than £40 you get a set that you won't get tired of. The building of the model can be a little fiddly with the two actuators but the finished product is amazing.
Bought the Hauler first (8264) which complements this set really well as they are scaled equally. Found that the speed of the model was slow so I added the Power Functions Motor Set (8293) and would strongly recommend that your do the same as it adds so much more to the model.
First time I've come across the linear gear shift selector (sorry if it's been around for years but the set I bought before the hauler was in 1989). Was really impressed with the design - so much so that I've got the Cherry picker in the cupboard which I'm looking forward to building this weekend."

one of the best I have

"Well I bought this set while on vacation and boy let me tell ya this is amazing. The Linear actuators work perfectly and it has some Universal Joints too that improve the performance. The second model is also very neat. Really the only improvement to this model would be to give instructions for a pf motor with model b. I have the pf motor set and i would reccomend it to anyone buying the excavator."

Excavator is Amazing
Posted: January 1, 2009
"This model shows a lot of the best of Lego. Technic sets, though not for looks, are very functional and are meant to be educational in that way. The 8294 Excavator excels as a Lego product, because it is overall of fine quality.
Lego products are designed mostly for play value and appeal; you might find an astonishing creation by a Lego fan that looks much more detailed than a regular Lego set, but then again it might not be suitable for playing with. The things I like about the Excavator's design is that it is complex, thought through, and strong. The frame is well constructed with beams, axles, pins, and other common Technic pieces. What amazes me is that they were able to make such a symmetrical and good looking structure as well as integrate all the gears, linear actuators, and even motorized parts so well together that the features work consistently and well, like the moving crane arm or the scooping bucket.
This set is fun and easy to use and play with. It also looks great and very realistic; Lego Technic designers are always looking at real life inventions and recreating them with Lego pieces.

"This LEGO Technic Excavator is amasing. His big size and his powerful working functions makes this model a "must have" in your LEGO collections. The mechanical actuators are very useful, they are an example of the evoution that LEGO Technic models are suffering. This Excavatos is ready to be upgraded with the Power Functions Motor Set which makes this set to be bought."

Great looking digger

"I like the look of the model very much! But was dissapointed with the slow working bucket movement. I miss the pneumatic actuators!!!! Should have just come with the power up kit as the model is a pain to operate by hand. (very very slow!) The track links will be great for other builds and should have developed a hand crank for the main boom to swing 360. Had more fun rigging the power up motor to run the tracks!!!!!!!"

It's more fun with the motor...
Posted: November 15, 2008
"This model looks very realistic, and really grabs the attention of everyone that sees it. It was also a pleasant surprise to build, as it actually works quite well, and in the way you would expect from an excavator. It is very sturdy, carrying it by the boom is no problem at all. I highly recommend adding the motor kit. The excavator's instruction book #2 includes the easy steps needed to do the install. The gearing is good, as the boom moves slow enough to be very forceful, and the bucket moves well. With the addition of the motor, the play value goes way up! And the battery box (which goes between the treads) actually adds much needed stability to the model, and gives it a better weighty feel. I also added the 2 LED lights in behind the 2 clear "lights" on the main boom, and it makes a nice addition. The regular instructions don't use the LED lights from the motor kit, but there's room to add the connector to the battery box terminal.
The treads prefer carpet, they are slippery Lego plastic, and slide on smooth surfaces. Squeezing some small peices of rubber tubing into some of the tread holes helps solve that annoyance.
The excavator makes a nice break from all the wheeled Technics that are usually offered. It also cries out for a matching dump truck with a 1-peice box that won't spill it's load through the gaps.
This model was built for a 3 year old to play with, and it should prove very popular. This one WANTS to be played with!

"Way cool. The gears are really cool, and the excavator looks like the real thing. Really is a good piece of Technic engineering. I think that the lego designers should continue coming up with these, 'coz they can only get better. Although, i must agree that the excavator without motor is a bit tiring after a while, but its nothing to stress about."

"The new Excavator is one of their best models yet. It is even better with the new Power Functions Motor Set, although they missed an opportunity to put the LED's on the 'lights' on the arm. I an going to add. an extra motor so as to be able to operate both actuators simultaneously. I like the idea of having the battery box between the tracks, even if it does mean that the rotational movement of the excavator is limited. All in all, an excellent product and well worth buying/ recommending to friends."

"This summer (2008) I have bought this set. together with the power functions box. the new pistons are quite nice, but i prefer the pneumatic ones. The crane arm is easy to handle but if you don't have a motor you feel your hand muscles in an half an hour. Also the tracks slide over smooth surfaces. you need carpet or other textile to let it run smooth. to get back on the power-funtions there is also a possibility to put lights on this model."

Amazing excavator
Posted: August 17, 2008
"This new lego technic crawler excavator looks amazingly realistic because of the new caterpillar treads and the new linear actuators designed to look like real pneumatic cylinders.
There are plenty of nice parts in this set which are very useful for building other models in the future, Including 60 tread links, a turntable, 2 linear actuators, a bucket scoop and 3 new sized universal joints!
Functionally however, this set is not good at all without the power functions motor set, as the linear actuators are very stiff to turn with low gearing due to the complex of cogs and universal joints creating friction which spoils the play experience.
On the other hand, this set is amazing with the power functions motor set added to it, and i have had buckets of fun scooping up cocopops, corn flakes, rice or lego bricks using this digger.
One downside is that it is not possible to make the arm raise/lower and extend/retract at the same time, due to a gear box clutch arrangement which allows one motor to peform two functions on the arm, but it is easy to replace this arrangement if you have a couple of cogs and axles and you buy another motor and put it in the left side of the digger's body behind the cab.
Overall, this is a good set for the parts on its own, and i would rate it 3,3,5 (overall, play experience, value of money).
If you purchase this and the motor set, I would rate the pair together as 5,5,4, as the play experience is way better, but the motor set is slightly expensive."

"I like the way how the boom and the tracks work, it looks very realistic! Many parts in this kit like the linear actuators and the tracks are also very useful for your future creations. Instructions for building in a PowerFunctions motor kit are included."

"I have to compliment Lego for doing a wonderful job on their products.I have built many of the Technic line and this one just keeps up the superb design abilities of the people at Lego. After I build them the kids just can't get enough of them.
I added the power function to this kit and it works just fine. The lights that are included make a great add on.
Thanks Again Lego."

Excavator Review
Posted: July 5, 2008
"This is the first Technic set i have built from the new style all liftarm technic ie without the traditional technic beam and studs, which technic lego seems to have moved away from.
This new style of build using axles, axle conectors, angle connectors and liftarms etc is definately more complex, but ultimately more detailed as a greater number of combinations create structure, form and rigidity. However i do like the new studless build style!
The excavator itself uses the new linear actuators, which i was interested to see in operation. They are quite large, they do workwell with PF motors, and can be operated well, all be it slowly, manually.
The actual gearing used to make the actuators work seems complex. A clutch style gearbox assembly is used to switch between actuators, so you cannot operate both acuators at the same time.
The actuators seem to have replaced the discontinued pneumatic cylinders which i felt were better as the were avaliable in smaller sizes and when linked to a motor powered compressor, worked very well.
The set uses a number of colours, red, blue, dark grey, light grey, black, tan and white. Lego seem to have chosen colour codes to help you build the more complex structures. However for my eye, 3 colours would of been fine.
The build instruction is modular in 3 sections, base with tracks, main body and excavator arm. I found the assembly instructions clear and easy to follow, build time approx 200 minutes."
