"We all like to save money, especially when it is also good for the environment, but whether a rechargeable battery will do either depends on the expected use.
The bottom line is that all batteries lose capacity with time. Unused rechargeable batteries are doubly at risk, because an unused rechargeable loses its ultimate capacity for charge at a faster rate than one that is actually being cycled through charge/discharge cycles. Batteries like being used.
So when I read a review from somebody who uses the NXT almost every day (as I currently do) I see somebody who is probably going to save money by buying this battery. But this toy is still new to me, and if in three months it is parked with the rest of the Legos waiting for the kids to get old enough to truly appreciate it (two more years, I think), then buying a battery that will lose a lot of capacity over two years would save neither my money nor the environment.
I have numerous rechargeable power tools in the garage, all of them with useless batteries: they are "single project" tools, bought for a job and parked for a couple of years after that. Next time I need them, the batteries are dead, and don't hold a decent charge afterward. All the tools I currently use plug into the wall.
How much do you plan to use your NXT? I believe I will probably continue to use this toy at least long enough to make back my investment in batteries and charger, and I am sure it will work just fine if I use it enough."
